Negril Review

This cafe is good stop for quick lunch or dinner. It is well patronized by nearby Howard University students and their visiting family. The chicken and goat dishes are usually good. Other dependable menu specialties include Jamaican patties, oxtails, and curried shrimp. One taste and you’ll know why. It is only a short walk from the nearest Metro Station.

Zumanity Review

Zumanity Review

Zumanity Review

Filled with aerial acrobatics, contortionists, comedic gags and naughty flirtations, Zumanity, which opened in 2004, forces you to leave any latent prudishness at the door. And Single Sistahs will definitely want a bite of the Cuban Candy Bar before the door closes behind them!

Zumanity mixes European-style cabaret theatre with adult entertainment, but takes it to another level by including all the signature elements you’ve come to expect from Cirque du Soleil: hauntingly beautiful music, delightful eye-catching characters, a kaleidoscope of lighting effects, well above average acrobatics and taut dance routines. The difference here is Zumanity explores human sensuality and eroticism – a bold departure from Cirque du Soleil’s family image. In fact, there are several risqué moments that may or may not surprise you.

Perhaps the best part of the show is the diverse cast of races, sizes, body shapes, and sexual persuasions. Yet for all of its artistry, to fans of Cirque du Soleil, Zumanity never soars because it tries to merge the troupe’s family brand image with its new subject matter. The result is a mix of jaw-dropping movements, sexy music and voyeurism, but not quite the best of what Cirque du Soleil shows are known for – artistry and technical execution.

Despite its aberration from the Cirque du Soleil family-friendly brand image, Zumanity is one classy show with an artistic repertoire, stunning dance and contortion routines, acrobatics, marvelous sets worthy of its ticket prices. No doubt, its a cut above other adult entertainment shows in Las Vegas. Even better, Cirque du Soleil updates scenes and characters of the show. So its worth a revisit.

In summary, if you prefer high-octane adult entertainment, see the 90-minute Zumanity before any other show on the Strip. If your taste runs towards family-friendly, we recommend the other Cirque du Soleil shows.

Ka Review

Ka pageant

Ka Show Review

Darkest of all Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas, Ka is an unprecedented ballet of 360-degree movement. But don’t confuse Ka (pronounced “Caw”) with a ballet you see in New York or Paris. It is radically beyond them and a mightier treat to experience.

The name Ka is inspired by the ancient Egyptian concept of the “Ka”, which is a spirit that accompanies every human being through this life and the next. In this show, the Imperial Twins and their ka journey pass fantastic creatures, sea storms, epic battles, and evil villains in their quest to reunite.

Ka has Cirque du Soleil’s impeccable attention to detail, acrobatics, swordfights, dance, and trademark artistry, but its spry storytelling seems a hair sharper than other Cirque shows, provided you stay focused on the storyline. Every scene contributes to and integrates well with the driving pulse of the story — Imperial Twins separated by distance and war.

Ka is arguably the most innovative and thrilling stage production on the planet. Though it seems impossible for a Cirque du Soleil show, Ka’s custom-built theatre is a bigger star than the performers, but not in a way that dwarfs them. Instead, the Hollywood sets, daunting stage elements, pyrotechnics, and other technical wizardry endow performers with superpowers. One epic battlefield scene is so incredible, that you will not believe your eyes.

Lest you think Ka is a “testosterone ballet”, be assured that all scenes drip with imagination, colorful costumes, and exquisite dance with engaging storytelling at all levels. This groundbreaking ballet is as beautiful as a hummingbird in flight, yet as deft as a ninja’s sword.

The music of Ka nicely amplifies the story but is not quite as memorable as O or as surreal as Mystere. Given Cirque du Soleil’s history of gradual refinement over time, one can anticipate that the music of Ka will be as compelling as that of O, but not reach the command performance of Mystere. But Ka does not need to reach that level musically.

Ka is far too expensive to produce anywhere else. The best Broadway shows are happy to earn $40 million and their sets cost less. Ka cost $135 million to produce. Like O, this show depends on millions of free-spending visitors each year that only Las Vegas delivers. Every seat is great for viewing. If you like this kind of technical artistry, Ka will be your favorite Cirque du Soleil show and well worth the highest price in Vegas.

Mystère Review

Mystere takes audiences on an journey like Alice and Wonderland, where the end seems like the beginning. Opening with a clown who does cheerful things with popcorn, the show ascends with lively sounds and soaring vocals. Then the journey unfolds a wide palette of brilliant colors and more richly textured sound by accomplished musicians and vocalists. The custom-designed, acoustically-tuned theatre makes the most of it by filling all angles of your ears. The international cast of dancers fill the stage and sometimes, aisles, so get seats in the middle for full effect. No matter where you sit the acrobats will get you cheering out of your seat with phenomenal performances.

From the most graceful dancers and trapeze acts to the least significant imps wandering around, the lavish costumes and riveting sets still drape you in this theatrical circus of the bizarre. Even the perky clown, captures your imagination between acts when he tosses objects in the crowd, makes whimsical utterances and does other funny things you’d least expect. In fact, the clown typifies Cirque du Soleil’s trademark element of surprise. Though its storyline is surreal and draws the occasional, “why did they do that”, it never drifts to the absurd.

Watch as aerial acrobats catapult above the stage. They used to do acts without a net. Now they do more difficult acts with a net for hand-to-hand and hand-to-leg catches that require the utmost in concentration, precision, timing and years of trust. Your mouth will be agape as they confidently pass within inches of each other executing imaginative and dangerous acts high above you. And you won’t feel guilty pleasure because they tried something great, but missed a catch.

As the oldest Cirque du Soleil production and most award-winning “Production Show” in Las Vegas, it set the standard for high-end acrobatic entertainment. Even today with tremendous competition on the Strip, Mystère still dazzles with artistry and athleticism that earn every cheer. A show so nice, many see it twice or thrice.

O Review

O performer

O Review

In the theatre of the mind, O percolates with daring imagination and refined technical accomplishment. From the moment the lights dim, you are hypnotized like a 4-year listening to a bedtime story. O compels you to look. Dream-like aquatic sequences distort your reality even as you marvel at Olympic-champion synchronized swimmers flawlessly executing their acts. Just when you think you have it figured out, this surreal theatre of the mind amazes and surprises at each turn.

That O is an aquatic celebration of life, love and death is only partially true. The generous body of material includes a trapeze, high dive, fire handling, enigmatic clowns, and aerial hoops. A show-stopping water barge scene is absolutely mystical. Oversized hats somehow fit perfectly. Zebra-skinned serfs fit in as normally as people in a Norman Rockwell painting. The array of captivating imagery is as voluminous as it is magnificent. It’s Alice in Wonderland performed by swimmers, acrobats, contortionists, artisans and imagineers at the height of their powers.

Music for each scene is deftly tuned and executed by the house band and vocalists, though not quite as memorable as that of Mystere. The well-placed lighting system of 1,695 dimmers and 230 color scrollers precisely set the atmosphere for every square foot of scenery. Those with an eye for color schemes will appreciate the fine hues and trimming of each costume, which are as precise as the acrobatics.

Once you see the multi-million dollar set design customized for O, you realize this is no ordinary theatre. The set features a 1.5 million-gallon pool that is 25 feet deep and measures 150–by-100 feet. The hydraulic riggings for the more complex set pieces run perfectly, despite water submersion. Places on the set become water-laden, dry and then water-laden again, as if someone had wished a genie to make it so. The director’s every whim has been met by the producers, and we the audience, get to indulge in the director’s fantasy.

Such a technical and artistic tour de force could only exist in the premier adult entertainment destination – Las Vegas. Far too expensive elsewhere, this show depends on and gets hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Treat yourself to the fantasy. The price will pinch you, but its well worth every penny. O merits a trip to Vegas on its own. Besides, you’ll have lots of water-cooler material after this one. O has performed at Bellagio since 2001.

The Beatles’ LOVE Review

The Beatles LOVE

The Beatles LOVE

The Beatles’ LOVE

LOVE takes audiences on a passionate, iconic journey of the Beatles music from the 1960s and 70s. Like those halcyon days, at least for those of us born in the 1950s or earlier, this nostalgic journey is treat to experience and remember like Yesterday. Before summarizing the show experience, a bit of context is in order.

As a young brother only age 11 by 1968, I was aware of and respected the Beatles for their powerful impact on Pop Music. They appeared in the news practically everyday when there were only 3 national TV networks. Yet, I did not culturally connect with them since my daily diet was Soul Music. Nevertheless, I liked I Want To Hold Your Hand because someone played it at a party and I got to hold a cute girl’s hand while dancing!

But like all Americans, be they Black, White, Brown and Red hoping for the end to the Vietnam War, more of our daily concerns began to intersect in the words and instrumentals of R&B, Rock and Pop Music. Black and White groups began appearing in concerts together. Audiences cross-pollinated a musical appreciation of these groups as equals in the genre. The Beatles professed their sincere love of and influence by R&B-Soul Music and the artists who created it. They even planned a secret recording session at STAX Records studio. But word leaked out causing traffic jams that scuttled the recording session. So in 1970 when the Beatles broke up, it was important news, even in Black America, though not as big as the break up of my beloved Temptations (Paul Williams death, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks exit).

By 1973-75, I and many of my contemporaries, appreciated the lyrics and musicality of many Beatles songs. Hey Jude, All You Need is Love, Yesterday, Revolution, and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds easily come to mind. But many Beatles songs I still don’t understand like, I Am The Walrus. Huuummm, must be a British thing.

Approaching this show, I was primed to revisit a precious collection of some of the best music of those times. Now I could do it with the benefit of middle-age context. LOVE did not disappoint.

In this type of show, sound really matters. To the trained ear, all the Beatles songs must have been digitally re-mastered. There were no ticks or pops like the album recordings of those days. The songs are mostly loud, but never distorted. Guitars sound like guitars, drums sound like drums and bass sounds like bass, not the 75% distortion heard on many popular records today. In addition to the acoustically-tuned theater that perfectly reflected sound to your ears, there are 3 speakers in each seat – so over 6,500 total speakers create the most complex audio system in the world!

The musical journey takes advantage of all the set design, technical, and acrobatic wizardry for which Cirque du Soleil is justly acclaimed. Its been said that music is the door to our emotions. If true, colors must represent the walkway in. LOVE’s kaleidoscope of colors amplifies the passion of music in ways that can only be described by experiencing the show.

An international cast of 75 dancers, character actors, and acrobats, is presented with full impact because the closest seat is only 23 feet from the stage, while the furthest seat is only 98 feet. The stage is made up of 7 lifts, several trap doors and 1 turntable. Each lift is capable of elevating 20,000 lbs. So you will see many artists “techno-magically” fly, lower, levitate and disappear across the auditorium. And of course there’s always Cirque du Soleil’s trademark element of surprise. Moment by moment, you are captivated.

Overall, the show was fantastic and held rousing appeal to those of us age 40 and over. Must be a generational thing. I only wish Cirque does a similar book-end show for the Temptations. Maybe I should hold their hand.
