Old Salem Museum & Gardens
DESCRIPTION: As one of the most authentic living history restorations in the United States, Old Salem lets you stroll through a restored town and immaculate gardens to experience life as the Moravians did beginning in 1753. Moravians were missionaries who established an early settlement in 100,000 acres of North Carolina backcountry at the Wachovia Tract. Salem was the central administrative, spiritual, craft, and professional town surrounded by five outlying congregations. The Moravians were also notable for permitting an African Church in their community. No one else did in these parts.
