DESCRIPTION: This $33-million, 65,000-square-foot cultural center and museum was opened to great fanfare in 2009. It is a multi-disciplinary venue named in honor of the great Pittsburgh playwright, August Wilson. It honors his on and off-Broadway plays. Many people know his work by the 2016 movie Fences, featuring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. The center’s cultural center-museum duality reflects all aspects of African American culture with galleries, classrooms, a 486-seat theater, a gift shop, a cafe, and multipurpose spaces used for visual and performing arts by community resources. The center serves as a hub for people celebrating and experiencing the ongoing contributions of African Americans in music, theater, dance, science, athletics, business and many other aspects of American life, with particular emphasis on Western Pennsylvania. Talk about convenience, the center is located across from David Lawrence Convention Center and walking along Liberty Avenue, is only steps away from the Pittsburgh Theatre District and T Wood Street Station where you can board the light rail for rides to Point Park, North Side stadia and nightclubs, BNY Mellon Center, 1st Street Station area cafes and Station Square attractions.
