DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1968 by a diverse group of artists, community activists and philanthropists, the Studio Museum in Harlem has become a magnet for local, national and international artists of African descent and for work inspired and influenced by black culture. This cultural gem was originally located at 2055 Fifth Avenue. In 1979, the New York Bank for Savings donated the current building for larger space. In 1985, the museum expanded to an adjacent lot to host a number of outdoor events. Over time, generous support has enabled the museum to add gallery space, and a theater to accommodate larger temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection that includes nearly 2000 paintings, sculptures, watercolors, drawings, pastels, prints, photographs, mixed-media works and installations dating from the nineteenth century to the present. Featured artists in its celebrated collection include Romare Bearden, Robert Colescott, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Lewis, Chris Ofili, Betye Saar, Lorna Simpson, Hale Woodruff and James VanDerZee. This eponymous venue is a frequent host of galas, special community events and fundraisers. Further evidence of the museum’s commitment to art education is its semi-annual Studio Magazine. The diverse, well appointed gift shop is a must visit for savvy art collectors.
