African American Museum of History & Culture
The venue contains exhibits from several Natchez related African American historic sites, influential citizens, and events. Other exhibits within the museum include The Rhythm Nightclub fire, considered one of America’s most deadly nightclub fires; Forks of the Road, which was the second-largest slave market in the South; and some of the literary works of critically acclaimed author Richard Wright, a Natchez native. Natchez National Historical Park
Want to get some virtual history lessons on your trip? Add this park to your itinerary. The William Johnson House is the home of William Johnson, an African American freed from slavery in 1820 at the age of 11 and became a respected businessman before his murder in 1851. Johnson’s diary was published in 1951, providing unique and detailed insight into African American life in the 19th century, and the National Park Service opened his house as a museum in 2005. Grand Village of the Natchez Indians has ample space to socially distance. Today’s visitors can enjoy the museum and take a walking trail through the 128-acre park to view three ceremonial mounds. Two have been excavated and rebuilt to their original size allowing a glimpse into the lives of the Native Americans of 1730. The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians is now offering a completely virtual experience with Timelooper that transports you back in time. They also offer self-guided tours with new interpretive signs throughout the village. The park is free to visit.
