Cookhouse Moco Loco

Cookhouse Moco Loco on Molokai

Molokai Where To Eat

The Visitors Association can provide a list of restaurants in town. Two that we recommend are Kualapu’u Cookhouse (try the Loco Moco) and the Coffee of Hawaii’s Espresso Bar and Café, the chicken parmesan sandwich is great.

No visit to Moloka’i is complete without a bread run. We wait until the dead of night, drive to now-deserted Kaunakakai, park near the middle of Ala Malama Street and creep down a dark alley. The heavy scent of freshly baked bread and a waist-high cornflower blue sign directs us to the back door of Kanemitsu Bakery.

At 11 pm, we find several souls waiting in line to trade cash for coveted loaves still hot from the oven. A large menu lists the toppings available: blueberry, strawberry, cinnamon/sugar, butter and cream cheese. A plain loaf costs $6, with a dollar or two more for the extras. We spring for several golden brown loaves, and tear into them when we get back to the van. Warm, sweet and buttery, they are definitely worth the caper.

In years past, I’m told the bread run truly resembled a drug buy – same dark alley, but no signs, no menus, and a closed back door. You’d knock, give your order to someone who then shut the door in your face. When your bread arrived, you’d fork over the cash just before the door closed again. The front of the bakery is open during regular business hours if you prefer to shop without slinking down an alley at midnight. But what’s the fun in that?

Or, if you’re renting a big house and want to spoil yourself, give Chef Paul Hill a call. He’ll come to where you are and prepare scrumptious meals. We especially loved his Baby Back Ribs. Chef also can tell some colorful tales. Ask him about his Navy days in Canada or his gardening challenges in Samoa.
