Milwaukee Art Museum
DESCRIPTION: The over-sized Brise Soleil sculpture atop the new Quadracci Pavilion instantly became Milwaukee’s defining icon of the 21st century; Brise Soleil “wings” open when the museum opens and closes when the museum closes. 217-feet wide and affixed to a spire like strings on a harp, the wings “flap” (close and open) each day at noon for visitors’ enjoyment, weather permitting; not to be outdone, the MAM is notable for works by African American artists in its permanent collection since the 1920s. Resulting from a buying spree in the 1990s, the museum now boasts fascinating range of works by Henry Ossawa Tanner, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, Richard Hunt, Sam Gilliam, and a prominent Haitian Art exhibit.
