Museum of Mississippi History
DESCRIPTION: Opened 9 December 2017, the museum encourages people to explore and appreciate the state’s history by presenting rich and complex stories. The best part is that it illustrates how a shared past influences our future together. The museum explores over 15,000 years of state history with thousands of historic and innovative exhibits, educational programs, and hundreds of artifacts. Main galleries are The First Peoples 13,000BC-AD 1518, Cultural Crossroads 1519-1798, Joining the United States 1799-1832, Cotton Kingdom 1833-1865, Bridging Hardship 1928-1945, Forging Ahead 1946-Present, and Reflections. The Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum open on a date coincident with the state’s bicentennial.

Mississippi Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION: One of the oldest symphony orchestras in the US and continues today with a full season of Bravo Events and Pops Events. MSO reaches out to communities to offer educational programs and collaborations with other organizations, bringing Mississippians the finest in musical experiences.

Old Capitol Museum
DESCRIPTION: African, Native-American and European cultures from 1500-1800 are featured in the gallery’s exhibits and highlight the complexity of interaction between these cultures and their contributions to Mississippi. A National Historic Landmark and one of America’s finest examples of Greek Revival public architecture, the Old Capitol building served as state capitol from 1839 to 1903, housing such notable events as the passage of the Ordinance of Secession, a major spark for the Civil War. Restored from 1959 to 1961 for use as the state historical museum. The Civil Rights Exhibit is the US first permanent exhibit of the Civil Rights Movement and contains film footage, documents, photographs, posters and artifacts pertaining to Civil Rights in Mississippi. The Old Capitol also showcases exhibits of Mississippi from prehistory through the Civil War, Reconstruction, the cotton culture. The gift shop sells folk art, crafts and books. Guided tour available.

New Stage Theatre
DESCRIPTION: This venue presents musicals, drama, children’s theatre and new works. Founded in 1965 with a seating capacity of 364, New Stage produces a critically-acclaimed season of plays ranging from musicals to children’s theatre, to comedies, to cutting-edge drama, including new works offered through the Eudora Welty New Play Series.

Mississippi Crafts Center – Natchez Trace
DESCRIPTION: A retail outlet of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi also serves as Natchez Trace Visitor Center. Built on the historic Natchez Trace Parkway in 1975, its a showplace of both traditional and contemporary folk arts and crafts of our state. Informative exhibits and live demonstrations involve visitors in the artist process. It has Choctaw Indian crafts to fine pewterware handcrafted by Mississippi artisans. On Saturdays from March – October, craftsmen demonstrate their techniques from Choctaw Indian basketry to wood carving to quilting and weaving.
