Antioch Missionary Baptist Church
DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1868 by Jack Yates and other ex-slaves, in the same year Yates became an ordained minister. By 1875, Antioch members built a brick church. Reverend Yates also led the church in working with the federal government to setup one of three Freedmen’s Bureau schools in Houston. The current edifice was built in 1910 and renovated in the 1930s. Today the church provides character and charm in contrast to the surrounding skyscrapers and parking garages. It is a National and State Historic Landmark. In addition to Sunday services and numerous community outreach programs, the church is known as an oasis for noon-time prayer services to office workers.

I grew up going to one of the finest and long-standing black churches in Houston included on this list. I’ve been missing it since we moved, but I’m so pleased I discovered https://lhhouston.church/, whose pastor reminds me so much of the charming and educated speakers here!
