This amazing museum and National Historic Site is a must-visit for everyone who enjoys cultural travel. Take the kids for an inspirational learning experience! America’s First Black Man of Science, Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) was born a free person in Baltimore County. His father purchased this land and willed it to him at age 6. At age 22, self-taught Banneker constructed a striking clock. In 1789, he forecasted a solar eclipse. In 1791, he helped survey Washington, District of Columbia. Banneker corresponded with President Thomas Jefferson regarding the mental faculties of African-Americans being higher than whites believed and his opposition to slavery. In 1792, his first almanac was published. This museum which opened in 1998, reassembles the body of work and artifacts related to this astounding Black Renaissance Man. The venue includes a short audio-visual presentation on the life of Benjamin Banneker. Donations are accepted.
