Managed by the National Park Service, this museum/visitor center is a good starting point to understand the contribution of Martin Luther King, Jr., Joseph Lowery, Ralph Abernathy, Hosea Williams and many others in America’s modern Civil Rights Movement, where Atlanta played a central role. The featured exhibit, “Courage To Lead”, follows the parallel paths of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement. See what’s new in the D.R.E.A.M Gallery home of special exhibits that change from time to time. Sensitive life-like depictions traverse major episodes in the movement and it contains the wagon used to transport Dr. King’s casket during the funeral procession through Atlanta in April 1968. The Civil Rights Walk of Fame is in front of the building, accented a monument to the man who influenced Dr. King’s non-violent activist strategy, Mahatma Gandhi. The visitor center sits across the street from Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-violent Social Change. The visitor center should be your first stop in this National Historic Area and is prime location to watch the annual MLK Day Parade down Auburn Avenue.
