Center for Civil & Human Rights Review

The Center for Civil & Human Rights opened in 2014, this architecturally bold center is an engaging cultural venue that connects the American Civil Rights Movement to the Global Human Rights Movement. Visitors explore the fundamental rights of all human beings so that they leave inspired and empowered to join the ongoing dialogue about human rights in their communities. This 42,000-square foot structure was imagined by civil rights legends Evelyn Lowery and former United Nations Ambassador & Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young and was launched by former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. Perhaps the most important feature of this museum is how it espouses the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Shortly after World War II, a set of basic principles was established and placed before the United Nations declaring the inalienable rights of all people around the world. Its goal was to document the lessons learned from past decades of violence and injustice. The UDHR contains thirty sets of principles for governments to use to remain accountable for their duty to protect the rights and freedoms of all people. In terms of signature galleries, the center features Voice to the Voiceless, Every Line is a Song Each Shape is a Story, Spark of Conviction – The Global Human Rights Movement, and Rolls Down Like Water – The American Civil Rights Movement. In total, the center is well worth 1 to 1.5 hours of your time.
