Mazatlan International Airport (MZT) is located in Mazatlan, Sinaloa. MZT Airport, located on the southeast side of the city, is a midsize 2-terminal 2-story airport that does domestic and international flights. It is located about a 25-minute drive south from the main tourist area in Mazatlán. The airport handles about 1 million passengers per year. MZT serves 1,000,000 people/year. When your airplane arrives, it may or may not be connect to a gate. If your airplane doesn’t connect to a gate, they will roll stairs up to the airplane for you to disembark upon.

There is only 1 baggage carousel. The immigration officer will typically only ask you to fill in the number of days that you are allowed to stay in the country, typically 180. The MZT has been renovated with lots of seats, shops and dining options. The main terminal on the lower level has shops and a bar.

Ground Transportation

MZT Airport Transfers include SuperShuttle or GO Airport Shuttle. Taxis to the airport cost US $30-40, depending on how far your hotel is from the airport.

Upon reach your tourist area and dropping off luggage at the hotel, avoid local buses, unless you are accompanied by a local friend who knows the route. Instead, use the open small white tourist taxis called pulmonias unique to Mazatlan. Or consider Private Sedans that offer sightseeing tours, including the Salsa and Salsa Mazatlan. Reserve well before your trip.

Cruiseport

Mazatlan is part of the popular Mexican Riviera cruise circuit of Los Angeles, San Diego, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Carnival, Disney, Holland America, Norwegian, Princess, Regent Seven Seas and Oceania cruise lines have a Mazatlan port-of-call. The cruise dock is located in the commercial port area. From the modern new cruise terminal, passengers can walk 1 mile to Old Town tourist district by following the blue-lined cobblestone walkway. It is a pleasant walk through an attractive residential district. Other prefer to take a taxi with fellow cruisers to save cost.

Caution

Even before COVID-19, the Sinaloa state of Mexico is not the safest place in the world. That is why you should first review the U.S. State Department COVID-19 Mexico Travel Advisory for reopening Mazatlan to international tourism. Once it reopens for international travel, wait until the U.S. Travel Advisory reduces to Level 3 again, if you plan to fly and stay here several days, stick to the Golden Zone, Old Town and Malecon areas, where Tourist Police maintain a presence. For an extra layer of safety upon arrival by airport, only use a reliable transfer service taking a direct route to those areas. Or if traveling in a group, consider booking a stretch limousines for an amenity-filled ride.

Getting involved in the drug trade, including Marijuana, will increase the risk of violent crime against you. Don’t make yourself a target. Wearing fancy jewelry, flashing large cash or being drunk in public gets the attention of all the wrong people. Try to blend in without showing signs of wealth.
