Salt Lake City, Utah

Utah

Although research has not yet identified any black settlements in Utah, evidence of African American presence in the state is undeniable. Both the Ninth and Tenth Calvaries (Buffalo Soldiers) were stationed here at one time or another. Black historic characters who resided in the state included mountain man Jim Beckworth, who charted the first path through Nevada to California by a non-Native-American.

Outlaw Isom Dart, who rode with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and “sharp-shooter” Deadwood Dick all spent time in the territory. In contrast, Samuel D. and Amanda L. Chambers were early mormons in the Latter-day Saints.
