History

Organized as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School, this educational institution began in 1912. A land-grant institution, it was raised to the status of a four-year teachers’ college in 1922 and elevated to full-fledged land-grant university status in 1958.

Today, Tennessee State University is a comprehensive, urban, coeducational university located five minutes west of downtown Nashville, the state capital and second-largest city in Tennessee.

Avon Williams Campus is located downtown near the center of Nashville’s business and government district.
