Southern University at New Orleans

History

Southern University at New Orleans was founded as a branch unit of Southern University and A&M College on Baton Rouge. Established as an open community of learners, classes began with 158 freshmen, one building and a motivated faculty of 15. The University offered 10 courses in four academic disciplines: Humanities, Science, Social Science and Commerce.

Academic Merit

Southern University at New Orleans is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate, Bachelor, and Masters degrees. This public, 4-year, co-educational institution has 2300 students. Undergraduate majors include:

Campus Life

Southern University at New Orleans has 17-acre site near Lake Pontchartrain that gives the campus a shorefront feel. It has on-campus housing and students enjoy being only 7 miles from downtown New Orleans. Jazz historians and Jazz fans should check out the Institute for Innovative Jazz and Performing Arts.
