Norfolk State University

History

Founded in 1935, Norfolk State University in Virginia was originally the Norfolk branch of Virginia State University. It later changed names several times, until settling on Norfolk State in 1979.

Virginia’s largest Historically Black College or University is located in Hampton Roads, a wonderful metropolitan area that can call the Atlantic Ocean, the Chesapeake Bay, and the James River home.

Academic Merit

Norfolk State has 7,000 students enrolled in five major schools with a total of 26 departments. Student organizations encompass professional, departmental, and special interest entities, honor societies, fraternities, sororities, and numerous social clubs.

It features 31 Bachelor’s Degree programs, 15 Graduate programs, and 3 Doctoral Degree programs.

Campus Life

Students gather at many special places around campus, including the Mills E. Goodwin, Jr. Student Center, the focal point for the university activities.

It serves all members of the university family — students, faculty, alumni, and guests — and is used for cultural, educational, recreational, and social activities as well.

Plus, there are many off-campus cultural, athletic, and entertainment areas including the six-acre Bayfront Ocean View Park, zoo, Botanical Garden, theater, opera, symphony, world-class art museum, and national maritime center, among other attractions.
