Morgan State University

History

Located in Baltimore, Maryland, Morgan State University was originally founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Its mission was to train Black men for Christian ministry.

Later, broadening its mission to educate both men and women as teachers, the institute went through several modifications, including a name change to Morgan College in 1890.

It transitioned from a private to a public institution when the state of Maryland purchased it in 1939 in response to a state commission study that found that Maryland needed to provide more resources and opportunities for its Black citizens. With further growth in its academic standing by 1975, the college upgraded to university status.

In 1988, Morgan State University became part of the University of Maryland System.
