History

Founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students, Delaware State University began as a land-grant college for agriculture and mechanical arts.

Though it began as a Historically Black College, it has evolved into a fully accredited, comprehensive university with a diverse population of undergraduate and advanced degree students.

Academic Merit

Delaware State University has over 3,200 students come from 28 states and 31 countries. There are roughly 170 faculty members in 20 academic departments and 80% have doctorate degrees. Delaware State offers 66 undergraduate degrees, 16 graduate degrees, and one doctoral degree.

Degree options include the disciplines of mathematics, natural and social sciences, education, airway sciences, visual and performing arts, business management, accounting and finance, agriculture, natural resources, and nursing.

Campus Life

The 400-acre Dover campus is only two hours away from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. It is also close to Atlantic City and the beaches in Delaware and Maryland. Seven residential halls, including three apartment-style residence halls for upperclassmen, are on campus. Among the 30 buildings, one finds Mishoe Science Center, 280-year-old Lockerman Hall, and a new administration building.

There are computer labs in almost every building. Each student has a data port for Internet access, a phone, a campus email address, and WiFi connectivity in some buildings. The university’s research focus is to attract grants in mathematics, applied optics, chemistry, and biotechnology.
