WEST VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY

HISTORY

Founded in 1891, West Virginia State College attained national prominence as an institution of higher education for Blacks, and among other specialties, it continues to serve as a center for Black culture. Voluntary desegregation in 1954 created a distinctive "laboratory of human relations." Consequently, the college attracted a racially and culturally diverse student body, faculty, and staff over the years, which may rattle your notions of what a HBCU should look like.

If integration in higher education is the goal, one can argue that this laboratory has generated successful results based on WVSC's reputation for removing barriers to education and leadership for women, people of color, and the physically challenged.

ACADEMIC MERIT

The primary mission of this land-grant college is to provide baccalaureate and associate degree programs in Arts & Sciences and professional studies. The College seeks to develop in its students a high level of competence in English and Mathematics, an increased appreciation of the liberal arts, and an expanded awareness of and respect for the contributions of women and minorities to society.

Majors include Art, Business, Biology, Chemistry, Communications, Economics, Education, English, Foreign Languages, History, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, and Social Work.

CAMPUS LIFE

West Virginia State College is nestled between the beautiful Appalachian foothills and the Kanawha River and between the two largest cities in the state: Charleston, just nine miles to the east, and Huntington, 40 miles to the west. Interstate 64, which connects the two cities, provides easy access to the campus for those driving from distant cities.

Since opening in 1907, the Drain-Jordan Library has accumulated 200,000 books and 900 periodicals in and more on microfilm and online databases. The campus has housing for all male, coed and married couples (with children).

Men's Sports include Football, Basketball, Women's Basketball, Track, Baseball, Softball, Volleyball, Tennis, WVIAC Conference. The West Virginia State College department of music presents several concerts each semester featuring soloists and small and large ensembles in every medium. Art exhibitions at West Virginia State College are housed in the Della Brown Taylor Art Gallery in the John W. Davis Fine Arts Building. A Faculty Lecture Series features individual faculty and invited guests who make presentations in their chosen field or on hot topics of the day.
