Hilton Head Island

Mitchelville
Organized in 1862 it was the first freedman village in the United States. Surrounding the intersections of Beach City and Bay Gall Roads, it includes St. James Baptist Church and Cherry Hill School Building – among the first one- and two-room classrooms built for island Blacks in 1937.

Fort Howell
Located in a fenced in area off of Beach City Road in historic Mitchellville, the fort was named for Union General Joshua Howell in 1864. The 32nd U.S. Colored Troops constructed the fort.

Native Islander Gullah Celebration
Each February, this celebration showcases the arts, crafts, foods and history of the Native Island Gullah people. Celebration events include a month long Art Exhibit, Gospel Celebrations, the National Freedom Day Celebration, an Ol’ Fashioned Gullah Barbecue and De Gullah Playhouse featuring Aunt Pearly Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk.

Coastal Discovery: The Museum on Hilton Head Island
With indoor and outdoor exhibits, activity centers in the Sea Island Classroom, the History Time-line Exhibit, and Museum Store on-site, plus 11 different tours and cruises around the island. The Museum is a popular way to become familiar with the island’s unique history and ecology.
