National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Review

Over 100,000 enslaved people sought freedom via the Underground Railroad and free African Americans, European Americans, Native Americans and fugitive slaves acted as railroad conductors to their freedom. Interpreting their remarkable journies, the Freedom Center presents five permanent exhibits, including a special children’s exhibit that reveals much about the secret network to freedom. Interactive educational programs, family-centered research, and interpretive programs promote a comprehensive understanding of the horrors of slavery, active resistance movements, and the achievement of freedom against the odds. The Slave Pen is an authentic 19th century structure that serves as a centerpiece of reflection and connection with modern audiences. Many other Underground Railroad exhibits provide visitors a concise historical summary of that tawdry period of American history. In total, the museum presents an unparalleled collection of educational programs, research, and interpretive programs to promote a comprehensive understanding of the horrors of slavery, active resistance movements, and the achievement of freedom against many odds.
