Sharp Street Memorial United Methodist Church
DESCRIPTION: Founded 1787, the church also founded a day school for African Americans children in 1797. The first building was acquired at 112-116 Sharp Street in 1802, and was the first church building owned by African Americans. It is the “Mother Church” of Black Methodists in Maryland. In 1825, thirteen members were pioneers in the settlement of Liberia. In 1836, Frederick Douglass sang in the choir. In 1848, Prince Hall Masons resided at the church. In 1867, Centenary Institute, the predecessor to Morgan State College was established at the church. The church moved to its current location in 1898. A National Historic Landmark, the church owns Mount Auburn Cemetery, which is historically Black.

Bethel AME Church
DESCRIPTION: Founded just after 1787 by Rev Daniel Coker, it is the oldest independent black institution in the city. Bethel AME features a stunning Afrocentric mural in the sanctuary. One of the largest AME congregations in the nation.

Union Baptist Church
DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1852, with Rev. Harvey Johnson as pastor. Rev. Johnson also founded the Colored Convention in 1898, the convention evolved into today’s United Baptist Association.

First Baptist Church
DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1836 by Moses Clayton, who was formerly enslaved and became a lay minister. The original church was built by slaves and still contains artifacts such as pictures, newspapers, manumission papers, and other memorabilia on display.

St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and St. Francis Academy
DESCRIPTION: Established in 1864, it is the oldest African American Catholic Church in the nation. The high school academy is operated by the Oblate Sisters of Providence. 95% of recent graduates went on to college.

Mount Gilboa AME Church
DESCRIPTION: Benjamin Banneker (1737-1806) worshipped at this site before the current church was built. Nearly all the land you can see from this church was owned by Banneker. Without an heir to pass the land to, he arranged for his property to go to one nephew and the Ellicott Brothers. Banneker’s honorary grave site with obelisk is next to the church. The church is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
