TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY

 

 

HISTORY


   Organized as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School, this educational institution began in 1912. A land-grant institution, it was raised to the status of a four-year teachers' college in 1922, and elevated to full-fledged land-grant university status in 1958.

   Today, Tennessee State University (TSU) is a comprehensive, urban, coeducational university located five minutes west of downtown Nashville, the state capital and second-largest city in Tennessee.

 

CAMPUS LIFE


   The approximately 8,750 undergraduate and graduate student body representing 35 states and 55 countries enjoys a 450-acre main campus with more than 65 buildings situated in a residential setting. Additionally, Avon Williams Campus is located downtown near the center of the Nashville's business and government district.

   Over and above the benefits of living in a thriving center of government, business, industry and education, recreational activities include Music Row with the Grand Ole Opry, the famous Opryland Hotel, historic Market Street, Printer's Alley, the Tennessee State Capitol, and the historic Black Business District as well as numerous other Black historic and cultural sites.
