St. Louis was considered an outpost for French trappers before the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 expanded America's borders from the Mississippi River through the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast. 

This metro area of 2,600,000 residents has 460,000 African Americans.

St. Louis attracts six million visitors each year.

St. Louis hosts the sixth largest collection Fortune 500 headquarters and is a major aviation center. Anheuser-Busch, Emerson Electric, May Department Stores, Monsanto, Ralston Purina, TWA and McDonnell Douglas anchor the local economy.
