PHOENIX TRANSPORTATION

AIR

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is the 9th busiest passenger airport in America, with plenty of flights to all points across North America. Hotel shuttles and Taxis are plentiful and cheap from PHX Airport to downtown, only a few miles to the north. Car Rentals: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, and National serve PHX, which is just minutes east of downtown.

TRAIN

Amtrak station at 401 South 4th Avenue in Phoenix hosts one daily, scenic route through the desert:

Sunset Limited: Los Angeles-Phoenix-El Paso-San Antonio
-Houston-New Orleans

TRANSIT

Valley Metro Light Rail
began a 20-mile route in 2009 that connects the airport people mover system, major attractions downtown, northwest Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. More extensions are coming in the years ahead, including to the airport. A free DASH bus circulates around downtown Phoenix every 6 to 10 minutes.

Phoenix Freeway System is centered around downtown and the airport. The recently completed 101 Freeway Loop links west Phoenix, Sun City, Glendale, north Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe and Chandler to divert traffic away from the overcrowded airport and downtown Phoenix freeways. They have added many car pool lanes and ramp metering. But even with a Herculean construction effort the last five years, it is insufficient to catch up with crush traffic demand in this fast growing metro area. Allow extra time to every destination along Interstate 10 and Interstate 17 freeways. Acquaint yourself with these freeway numbers and names:

  10  Papago/Maricopa Freeway
  17  Black Canyon Freeway
  51  Squaw Peak Freeway
  60  Superstition Freeway
101  (Loop) Pima/Agua Fria Freeway
143  State Freeway
202  State Freeway
