WELCOME TO ORLANDO, FLORIDA

Visitors have come to the nearby Kennedy Space Center since the early 1950s to watch rocket ships take off over the Atlantic coast.  Then fate played a hand through the vision of Walt Disney who wanted his next theme park to be an order of magnitude larger than Disneyland in Southern California. Walt Disney, with his Walt Disney World and EPCOT Center, more than anyone or anything else, made Orlando one of the world's premier destinations. Recognizing the opportunity to expand family entertainment in the region, Universal Studios Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando opened major theme parks shortly afterwards. These days something family-oriented and exciting is built here nearly every year. Lesser known, but equally exciting tourist attractions can be found at Kissimmee and International Drive.

Though it began as a small city set amidst citrus farms, rapid growth in the region doesn't seem to dampen the spirits of residents. With so many visitors supporting the economy, they enjoy Orlando’s friendly neighborhoods, beautiful parks and lakes, lush landscaping and recreation at one of the world renown tourist attractions.

Downtown Orlando leaders now seem determined to earn the city respect for entertainment and cultural attractions that are not in a theme park. Church Street Station has been a great addition to the shopping and nightlife downtown. It’s a charming place to meet the locals. Other general attractions include Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, Central Florida Zoological Park, Leu Botanical Gardens, Orange County Historical Museum, Orlando Science Center, and Orlando Museum of Art lead the expanding cultural scene.

The Well's Built Museum of African American History in Orlando anchors Black cultural attractions in the region. Having the good fortune of Universal Studios as a partner, the museum documents north and central Florida's historic Black towns. A few miles north of downtown in Eatonville, like geese returning home, 100,000 people come to the Zora Neale Hurston Festival each January.

Sports enthusiasts appreciate the Orlando Magic NBA basketball team and the annual bowl game between Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman Colleges at the Citrus Bowl. Book early for the latter event since, it often sells out the local hotels – and that’s a lot of hotel rooms in Orlando.

Possessing a positive outlook and seemingly unstoppable growth due to its clean entertainment industry, Orlando is a fabulous travel destination and city for families and to relocate. Just wear light clothing.
