HISTORY


   Founded in 1935, Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia was originally was originally the Norfolk branch of Virginia State University. It later changed names several times, becoming Norfolk State University in 1979.

   Virginia's largest historically Black college or university, it is located in Hampton Roads, a wonderful metropolitan area which can call an ocean (the Atlantic), a Bay (the Chesapeake), and a major river (the James) home.


CAMPUS LIFE


   Norfolk State has 7,000 students enrolled in five major schools with a total of 26 departments. Student organizations encompass professional, departmental, and special interest entities, honor societies, fraternities, sororities, and numerous social clubs.

   Students gather at many special places around campus, including the Mills E. Goodwin, Jr. Student Center, the focal point for the university activities. It serves all members of the university family -- students, faculty, alumni, and guests -- and is used for cultural, educational, recreational, and social activities as well. Plus, there are many off-campus cultural, athletic and entertainment areas including the six-acre Bayfront Ocean View Park, zoo, Botanical Garden, theater, opera, symphony, world-class art museum, and national maritime center, among other attractions.
