MORRIS BROWN COLLEGE

HISTORY

Desiring to educate and uplift the children of the African Methodist Episcopal Church parishioners, supporters at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta furnished a room in their institution. And October 15, 1885 marked the formal opening of the first educational institution in Georgia under solely "Negro" patronage, Morris Brown College. The college was named in honor of the Second Consecrated Bishop of the AME Church.

CAMPUS LIFE

Today, with more than 2,400 students, this still predominantly African American co-educational institution offers majors in more than 40 areas of study including business sciences, computer science, chemistry, biology and hospitality administration. It is a vital part of the Atlanta Educational Complex.

In addition to the possibility of participation in over 75 organizations including six honor societies, four frats, and four sororities, there are also a wealth of off-campus activities such as the APEX (African American Panoramic Experience) Museum; Atlanta Historic Museum; Stone Mountain Park; Fox Theatre; Six Flags over Georgia; Olympic Park; Underground Atlanta, a six-city block retail shopping center; Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site; and the Civil Rights Museum.
