Old Capitol Museum
DESCRIPTION: African, Native American and European cultures from 1500-1800 are featured in the gallery's exhibits and highlight the complexity of interaction between these cultures and their contributions to Mississippi; a National Historic Landmark and one of America's finest examples of Greek Revival public architecture, The Old Capitol building served as state capitol from 1839 to 1903, housing such notable events as the passage of the Ordinance of Secession, a major spark for the Civil War; restored from 1959 to 1961 for use as the state historical museum; the Civil Rights Exhibit is the US first permanent exhibit of the Civil Rights Movement and contains film footage, documents, photographs, posters and artifacts pertaining to Civil Rights in Mississippi; The Old Capitol also showcases exhibits of Mississippi from prehistory through the Civil War, Reconstruction, the cotton culture; the gift shop sells folk art, crafts and books; guided tour available
