DRIVING

Detroit Freeway Network fans across the region like a spider web, enabling you to traverse long distances quickly in non-commute hours.  The exception is I-94 Freeway near the airport, which frequently bogs down despite car pool lanes and metered entrances to carry more traffic. Freeway signage has improved over the years, but study your map closely before getting behind the wheel. Northern Detroit has popular parallel boulevards such as 6 Mile Road, 8 Mile Road, and 10 Mile Road to denote their distance from downtown. Otherwise, familiarize yourself with these freeways and tunnels:

Dawson Expressway connects 10 Freeway to Conant Ave
5    State Freeway northwest to I-96 Freeway
10    Lodge State Freeway, downtown northwest to I-696 Freeway
14    State Freeway, Ann Arbor to I-275 Freeway
39    Southfield Freeway from Dearborn north to the 10 Freeway
59    State Freeway/Blvd from Pontiac east to Lake St Clair
75    Interstate Freeway from Michigan through Detroit to Ohio
94    Detroit Interstate Freeway - Ann Arbor to downtown
96    Jeffries Interstate Freeway from the west to Detroit
275    Interstate Freeway along western suburbs to I-96 Freeway
696    Interstate Freeway along northern suburbs to I-96 Freeway
