DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY

 

HISTORY

 

   Founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students, DSU began as land grant college for agriculture and mechanical arts. Though it began as a Historically Black College, it has evolved into a fully accredited, comprehensive university and a diverse population of undergraduate and advanced degree students. 3,200 students come from 28 states and 31 countries.


ACADEMIC MERIT


   There are 168 faculty members in 20 academic departments -- 140 have doctorate degrees. Delaware State offers 66 undergraduate degrees, 16 graduate degrees, and one doctoral degree. Degree options include the disciplines of mathematics, natural and social sciences, education, airway sciences, visual and performing arts, management, accounting and finance, agriculture, natural resources and nursing.

 

CAMPUS LIFE


   The 400-acre Dover campus is only two hours away from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. It is also close to Atlantic City and the beaches in Delaware and Maryland. Seven residential halls, including three apartment-style residence halls for upperclassmen, are on campus. Among the 30 buildings one finds Mishoe Science Center, 280-year-old Lockerman Hall and a new administration building.

   There are computer labs in almost every building. Each student has a data port for Internet access, a phone and a campus email address and WiFi connectivity in some buildings. The university’s research focus is to attract grants is in mathematics, applied optics, chemistry and biotechnology.
