![]() California African American MuseumLos Angeles DESCRIPTION: Opened in 1981, this 44,000 suare feet structure designed by Vince Proby and Jack Haywood, is a fixture in Exposition Park; exterior improvements were made in 2003; as LA’s principal museum for renown Black artists and sculptors, it often holds large touring exhibits and large visual arts collections; among its collections are 19th century Naturalistic Landscape painting by Edward Bannister, Robert Scott Duncanson and Grafton Tyler Brown, as well as Harlem Renaissance and Contemporary art by Sargent Johnson, Charles White, Beulah Woodard, Noah Purifoy, John Outterbridge, Betye Saar, John T. Riddle and David Hammons; African, Haitian, Jamaican and Brazilian artwork collections have also expanded in recent years; also has notable Los Angeles Black History artifacts, celebrates major Kwanzaa festivities and has a very active calendar of touring shows and events listed on its website
