BEING A BLACK SKI CLUB MEMBER

In the 1970s and '80s when a number of California-based Black Ski clubs began forming a solid following, the image of Black Skiers who could really ski was still a surprise to many. My first thoughts were, "it's too cold, too expensive and too white." I had to be convinced to join in the late 80s. When we first hit the slopes, I'm sure many of us can be quoted as saying, "You want me to go down that mountain! Are you nuts?"

But once I started, it became an addiction and noticed that the sisters are as bad as the brothers. We not only ski, some of us snowboard, shop, sightsee or just party! Regardless of the activity we chose, we are always the best dressed. We add our own flavor to the slopes and "there ain't no ski trip like a Black ski trip."

The thrill of skiing on US, Canadian and European slopes also sparks my sense of adventure and traveling the world with a like-minded group of friends is a real treat. Camaraderie and wonderful shared experiences seem to blossom. The ski stories, the parties and the life long friends developed are irreplaceable. Being a Black Ski Club member is more than skiing -- it's a social and networking adventure. I'm glad to be one!
