ALLEN UNIVERSITY

 

 

HISTORY


    Founded in 1870 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Allen University is the first institution of higher education in South Carolina founded by African Americans for the express purpose of educating African Americans. It is a Christian Liberal Arts institution of higher education.

    Student enrollment has increased from 120 students five years ago to over 500 students in 2001.

    Allen University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. You can earn a degree in these disciplines:

CAMPUS LIFE


    The University is located in the heart of Columbia, the state capital. Columbia is the home of several colleges and universities, the Museum of Arts and Sciences, Planetarium, Riverbanks Zoological Gardens, and the State Capitol.

    Religious activities are regularly scheduled. Lectures, seminars, and workshops on a variety of subjects are offered, as well as films, mini-concerts, special interest programs and performances by local and nationally recognized artists. Students are encouraged to participate in many other program offerings, such as leadership training, institutional and community service projects; and multicultural social activities.

 

   Students have the opportunity to participate in the Student Government Association, an organization that provides students a voice in the conduct of student affairs and University operations. The Student Government Association charters new organizations, sponsors leadership workshops, leads service projects, and supports the programming of Student Life.

    The Yellowjackets men's sports teams compete in the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics include Basketball, Cross-Country, Football, Golf, Track & Field. Womens sports include Basketball, Cross-Country Softball, Track & Field and Volleyball.
