Utah

Although research has not yet identified any black settlements in Utah, evidence of African American presence in the state is undeniable. Both the Ninth and Tenth Calvaries (Buffalo Soldiers) were stationed in Utah at one time or another and black historical characters, including mountain man Jim Beckworth, outlaw Isom Dart who rode with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and "sharp-shooter" Deadwood Dick all spent time in the territory. Samuel D. and Amanda L. Chambers were early members of the Latter-day Saints in Utah.
